National Hair Loss Awareness Month

August 6th, 2025 Posted in Article

August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month and whilst massage won’t necessarily make hair miraculously reappear, there are definitely some benefits to be had from having regular treatments.  If your hair is thinning and needs a little natural boost, read on.

Improved Blood Circulation

Scalp massage improves blood flow to the area and encourages more oxygenated/nutritious blood to the hair follicles.  This can support healthy hair growth and help reduce miniaturisation (linked to Androgenetic Alopecia).

Stimulation of Hair Follicles

The mechanical stimulation from massage can stretch dermal papilla cells in the scalp (located at the base of the hair follicle).  These amazing cells are thought to be like reservoirs housing multi potent stem cells and can be used to study hair formation and regeneration.

Breakdown of Scalp Buildup

The movement of the finger tips over the scalp can help exfoliate and to remove excess sebum, dead skin cells and product build up.  A clean, maintained and nourished scalp is a much healthier environment for hair growth.

Reduce Tension and Stress

The effects of massage on removing tension and lowering stress levels is well documented.  Some hair shredding can be partly attributed to high cortisol levels during times of stress.  A therapeutic massage will relieve stress and bring down those cortisol levels.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Whilst not strictly relating to massage, diet-related nutritional deficiencies can influence hair loss.  A lack of essential nutrients such as Iron, Zinc, protein, vitamins A, C, D and E and Omega 3s can weaken hair follicles and disrupt hair growth cycles.  An appropriately balanced diet can help improve hair growth or slow down hair loss.

Whilst you should aways consult with a trained professional before using any essential oils, it is suggested that Basil, Clary Sage, Cypress, Palmarosa, Rosemary, Thyme and Cedarwood, in a Jojoba, Almond, Avocado or Olive carrier oil, can be beneficial for use on thinning hair so a great massage medium.

With a lot of hair loss situations, it is simply genetics doing their thing and there is nothing to influence the eventual outcome.  However, a great self-care routine, started early could play a part in slowing down time and ensuring a ‘best case scenario’ for as long as possible.
